Isaiah Scroll - A  [1QIsa]

Oldest complete ms. of a Hebrew scripture yet discovered, datable before 100 BCE. Some wording varies from later standard Massoretic Hebrew text. It was the identification of this scroll (1948) that alerted the world to the importance of the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Found in Cave 1 at Qumran ( 1947) & purchased by the Syrian Orthodox archbishop of Jerusalem, the great Isaiah scroll was acquired by Israel in 1954 & has been the central exhibit in Jerusalem's Shrine of the Book since 1965.
