            Οὐκ ἄνθρωπος δύναται 
            ἐπὶ δυσὶ ἵπποις
            ἀναβαίνειν
            καὶ δύα τόξα τείνειν·
24 Οὐδεὶς δύναται    13  οὐδεὶς οἰκέτης δύναται    οὐδὲ οἰκέτης δύναται 
  δυσὶ κυρίοις δουλεύειν·     δυσὶ κυρίοις δουλεύειν·   δυσὶ κυρίοις δουλεύειν·
  ἢ γὰρ τὸν ἕνα μισήσει     ἢ γὰρ τὸν ἕνα μισήσει    
 

καὶ τὸν ἕτερον ἀγαπήσει, 

    καὶ τὸν ἕτερον ἀγαπήσει,    
  ἢ ἑνὸς ἀνθέξεται     ἢ ἑνὸς ἀνθέξεται   ἢ ἑνὸς τιμάσει
  καὶ τοῦ ἑτέρου     καὶ τοῦ ἑτέρου   καὶ τοῦ ἑτέρου
  καταφρονήσει.     καταφρονήσει.   καταφρονήσει.*
 

οὐ δύνασθε θεῷ δουλεύειν

    οὐ δύνασθε θεῷ δουλεύειν    
  καὶ μαμωνᾷ.**     καὶ μαμωνᾷ.**    

* Note: in the gospel of Thomas this couplet is followed by the aphorism of the wineskins.

** Note: μαμωνᾶς is the Greek transliteration of the Aramaic word for wealth.
