**Note: In the oldest extant codices (Sinaiticus & Vaticanus) & other early eastern witnesses (Clement, Origen, Eusebius plus Syriac & Armenian translations) the gospel of Mark ends unresolved at this point. Most later mss. have a longer ending (traditionally numbered vv. 9-20) which describes a few resurrection appearances, Jesus' ascension & his instruction to evangelize "the whole creation." Since these incidents reflect scenes in either Matthew, Luke or John most modern scholars regard these verses to be a later composition added to harmonize Mark with the other gospels. A briefer summary, without resurrection appearances or ascension but introducing a universal mission of those "around Peter," ends Mark in a few 9th c. mss.
